D54 es una tipografía variable que hace parte de mi proyecto de grado como diseñador gráfico de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Este proyecto tiene como objetivo general explorar el potencial que puede llegar a tener la tipografía en el campo de los visuales para conciertos. Para este fin, se plantea la producción de una tipografía variable que sea tratada en vivo mediante una plataforma web de testeo y animación de fuentes tipográficas como lo es Dinamo Font Gauntlet, esto con el propósito de que la tipografía y su variabilidad funcione como los visuales durante las presentaciones en vivo de la banda Los Basskerville.

D54 is a variable typeface that is part of my graduation project as a graphic design student at the National University of Colombia. The general objective of this project is to explore the potential that typography can have in the field of visuals for concerts. To this end, the production of a variable typeface is proposed, which will be manipulated live through a web platform for testing and animating typefaces, such as Dinamo Font Gauntlet. The aim is for the typeface and its variability to function as visuals during live performances of the band Los Basskerville.

En mi experiencia como guitarrista de Los Basskerville, una banda independiente de rock alternativo de Bogotá, hemos encontrado dificultades a la hora de implementar visuales en nuestras presentaciones, ya sea por falta de los equipos necesarios o por desconocimiento en el uso de softwares pensados para esta tarea. A partir de este problema pensé cómo se podría responder a esta necesidad desde el diseño y la tipografía, me preguntaba cómo implementar letras, palabras o frases en medio del show, sin llegar a abusar de este recurso y que se convierta en un karaoke.

Es así como nace “D54”, una fuente tipográfica variable que en conjunto con una plataforma de testeo de fuentes tipográficas como lo es Dinamo Font Gauntlet, permite a quien la controla crear patrones, animaciones y texturas que puedan ambientar un show musical en vivo. Con este proyecto, mi intención es experimentar y jugar con la tipografía, generando así, un instrumento más que va interactuando con el ritmo de la música.

In my experience as a guitarist for Los Basskerville, an independent alternative rock band from Bogotá, we have encountered difficulties when it comes to implementing visuals in our performances, either due to lack of necessary equipment or unfamiliarity with software designed for this task. Faced with this problem, I pondered how to address this need through design and typography, wondering how to incorporate letters, words, or phrases into the show without overusing this resource and turning it into a karaoke.

This is how 'D54' was born, a variable typeface that, together with a font testing platform like Dinamo Font Gauntlet, allows the user to create patterns, animations, and textures that can enhance a live music show. With this project, my intention is to experiment and play with typography, thus creating another instrument that interacts with the rhythm of the music.
